# How to set up a Discord verification bot with RestoreCord

A verification gate decides who sees your channels and, with RestoreCord, it also builds the member list you can restore later. Here's the whole setup, from creating the bot to testing it with a second account.

Short answer

Connect a custom bot in the RestoreCord dashboard, invite it to your server, then run Set up verification from the Discord Integration card. RestoreCord proposes a verify channel, the channels to protect and a message, and only touches Discord once you confirm.

## Start with your own bot

RestoreCord runs through a **custom bot**: a Discord application you own, named and branded for your server. Members see your server's name when they verify, and their authorization belongs to your bot. Every plan includes at least one, and the dashboard wizard under **Bots → Add New Bot** walks you through it while checking each credential.

If you prefer to prepare the application by hand first, do it in this order:

1. 1Create a new application in the Discord Developer Portal and give it your server's name and avatar
2. 2Open the Bot tab, create the bot user and copy its token. Treat that token like a password
3. 3Open OAuth2 and copy the client secret
4. 4Add RestoreCord's redirect URL under OAuth2 and save
5. 5Paste the values into the dashboard wizard and invite the bot to your server

```
Slash commands register themselves once the bot is connected, so there's nothing to deploy in Discord.
## Let RestoreCord build the gate
Open your server in the dashboard and find the **Discord Integration** card. **Set up verification** reads your channel names, categories, topics and existing overwrites, and you can steer it with a one-line prompt like `study server, keep mod channels private`. It comes back with a proposal: a verify channel, the channels to lock behind verification and a generated message. Nothing in Discord changes until you confirm.
If no existing channel is a safe fit, it suggests creating a fresh `#verify` instead of reusing your general or announcement channel.
Verification channel
Public
Explicitly visible before verifying.
Protected
Hidden until the member verifies.
Unchanged
Permissions left exactly as they are.
Only the View Channel permission, and only on channels you approved. Here's the effect with the usual give-role mode, where verifying hands out a verified role:
| Channel type                       | @everyone            | Verified role        |
| ---------------------------------- | -------------------- | -------------------- |
| Protected channel                  | View Channel denied  | View Channel allowed |
| Verify channel and public channels | View Channel allowed | View Channel allowed |
| Staff, ticket and log channels     | Left untouched       | Left untouched       |
Before each edit RestoreCord saves the channel's original overwrite as a baseline. If anything fails mid-run, it rolls those back and removes the message it posted, so a half-finished setup never strands your members.
## Make the verify message yours
The generated message is a Message Studio design. Reopen it from the Verification message row to rewrite the copy, add a banner or ask the AI bar to match your server's tone. The one hard rule: the design needs a **Verify** button or a `{verify_url}` link, or there's nothing for members to press. Variables such as `{server_name}` and `{member_count}` are filled in when the message is sent.
Discord won't let a bot manage a role above its own. In Server Settings → Roles, drag your bot's role above the verified role before you test, or members will verify and receive nothing.
## Test it like a new member
Use Test Send to DM yourself the design, then join with a second account and verify for real. Confirm the role arrives, the protected channels appear and the verify channel is visible to someone with no roles at all. Later, if you move the message, `/setup` in Discord re-posts it without ever changing permissions.
